What is spray foam insulation?

​Spray foam insulation is a combination of two materials (usually polyurethane and isocyanate, if you’re into that sort of thing) – mixed together into a thick, viscous liquid.

When mixed, these materials react and form a thick, hard, airtight material. This composite substance is then sprayed (or rather, squeezed) into the various cracks and crevices of your home or attic insulation, expanding and filling the entire crevice.

​It then hardens into the crevice, providing a rock-hard, air-tight seal, keeping moisture out and cold air out, while trapping the heat form your home in.

Open-Cell and Closed-Cell Foam

​Spray foam insulation comes in both open-cell and closed-cell forms, which each serve their own purpose, and can even be combined to create the perfect airtight insulation system.

Open-cell foam is permeable to moisture, but seals out air, and doesn’t provide as much of an insulating seal as closed-cell foam. This means it is cheaper per square inch, but also means a thicker layer must be used.

Closed-cell foam, on the other hand, is more expensive but provides a much better seal all-around. It is thicker and denser and can even
add some reinforcement to a wall.
